Henequen haciendas: a journey to 19th century Yucatan
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, henequen — a natural fiber extracted from agave — made Yucatan one of Mexico's most prosperous regions. The henequen haciendas were the center of this industry, and their owners amassed fortunes reflected in the monumental architecture that still stands today.
Hacienda Yaxcopoil, 33 km from Merida, is one of the best preserved. Its main house retains original furniture imported from Europe, a machine room with period equipment, and a chapel where workers were married. The visit includes the gardens and remains of the defibration machinery.
Hacienda Sotuta de Peon offers an immersive experience: you can follow the complete henequen process, from agave harvesting to fiber production, traveling on the original Decauville-type rails used to transport the output. It includes a private cenote where you can swim.
Hacienda San Pedro Ochil, now a restaurant, is perfect for lunch with author Yucatecan cuisine in a dreamlike setting. The restored gardens and industrial architecture create a unique atmosphere that transports you to another era.
The hacienda route can be done in a full day, combining two or three visits with stops at magical towns like Abala or Acanceh. The best season is November to March, when the climate is cooler and more pleasant for exploring the extensive grounds.
Our concierge team can arrange private transportation with a guide specializing in regional history to make the experience much richer. Ask at reception about available packages.
