The 5 most spectacular cenotes near Merida

Cenotes are geological formations unique to the Yucatan Peninsula: natural sinkholes of fresh water formed by the collapse of limestone rock that exposes underground currents. For the ancient Maya, they were entrances to the underworld and sacred places for offerings and ceremonies.

Cenote Suytun, one hour from Merida, is famous for its nearly closed vault where a beam of light penetrates from the ceiling, creating a magical effect especially at midday. A stone platform at the center lets you walk over the turquoise water. Arrive early to avoid crowds.

Cenote Ik Kil, next to Chichen Itza, is one of the most iconic. At 26 meters deep and surrounded by vines hanging from the surface, swimming here is an unforgettable experience. It's ideal to combine with a visit to the archaeological site.

Cenote Oxman, in Valladolid, offers a more tranquil experience. Located within a hacienda, it features a swing over the water and natural vines. The setting is lush and less crowded than other cenotes in the area.

Cenote Santa Barbara, in Homun (45 minutes from Merida), is actually a system of three connected cenotes accessible by bicycle or mototaxi. Each has a distinct character: open-air, semi-enclosed, and vaulted. It's the most authentic and least touristy experience on our list.

Practical tips: use biodegradable sunscreen (cenotes are fragile ecosystems), bring water shoes, a towel, and a change of clothes. Most charge between $100 and $250 MXN for entry. Our concierge can arrange private transportation and an itinerary combining several cenotes in a single day.
